A search of the area turned up no more evidence of the mysterious figure theyâd seen. Skylar didnât question Tyson further about Dominic and for now he seemed lost deep in thought. She couldnât help but wonder if the man theyâd seen had been the drug kingpin, freshly out of jail and checking up on his operation. If so, had he suspected that Bernie had turned information about the drop over to the police? Even if he hadnât, he would now. She called the drop-in center only to find out Bernie had already left to see his girlfriend. She both called and texted the cell phone number Bernie had given her and got no answer.
She prayed for the teenagerâs safety.
Finally, they hiked back to her car and got inside. Slowly she turned the car around in a wide circle until they were pointed back toward the city.
âI told you about Dominic the other night while we were getting pizza,â Tyson said. âI donât remember everything I said.â
âYou told me that he loved Echo,â she said, âand that he never made it back.â
âWhich is all true,â Tyson said. âBut thereâs a short version of the story and a long one. I told you that we met Echo in the building complex we were securing. We thought it was empty, then Echo came running out barking his head off and warning us that we were in danger.â He glanced over his shoulder to the dog now sitting in the back seat. âHe saved our lives.â
Skylar turned her head to smile at Echo.
âWe took him back to the base with us,â he said. âBut he didnât really stay. He was a pretty independent dog. Heâd come and go, then one day he didnât come back and we thought weâd seen the last of him.â
He paused as if remembering a particularly unpleasant memory.
âFew weeks later, a group of us were on a rescue mission in the mountains,â he said. âGavin, Nelson and Ben were there along with some others, including several rangers whoâd never served under me before. It was a big operation. Now, the caves of Afghanistan are in some ways remarkably similar to the Rocky Mountains. There is a whole network, like a labyrinth, which we sometimes used to travel or hide in. We had intel that a local warlord had kidnapped a diplomat and was hiding him in the caves. We went in after him. It was a pretty dangerous mission. In fact, Iâm pretty sure itâs one of the times I dropped the flippant ârun, boom, dieâ line that I now wish Iâd never said.â
She reached for his hand, but this time his arms were so tightly crossed, it was like theyâd turned to rock under the tension. She pulled back.
âWe found Echo in one of the caves,â he said. âThe dog was injured and chained up, but it was definitely him. Once weâd extracted the diplomat safely, I told my men that I was going back in to rescue Echo.
